SmackDown Recap – 1/28/16

Angie here with your weekly Smackdown recap. Before I get started, I want to wish The Wrestling Chronicle a Happy 3rd Birthday! I have to thank Erik for giving me this cool opportunity to write my thoughts about what’s going on in WWE and also introducing me to wrestling outside WWE as well. So, thanks again, Wrestling Chronicle! Now let’s recap.

Written by: Angie Delgado

It’s a post Rumble Smackdown so it begins with a video package of what happened at the end of the Rumble match. Also in the video package was The Authority announcing a triple threat match featuring Roman Reigns, Dean Ambrose, and Brock Lesnar to determine the number one contender for the WWE World Heavyweight Title.

Smackdown opens up with The New Day and recapped The Rock’s appearance from Monday Night Raw, which was brilliant and odd at the same time. New Day is out here calling Rocky a “doo doo mouth” and that you can’t say llama penis on a family show. Oh, here comes The Miz interrupting The New Day and here comes The Usos and interrupting The Miz. This is a Smackdown tradition. So of course, an eight man tag team match is set up.

The Usos, Titus O’Neil, and Dolph Ziggler vs The New Day and The Miz

As I said earlier, Smackdown is pretty much the home of the multi-man tag matches. It’s ok, I guess for a show like Smackdown, So is Titus O’Neil going solo again? WWE never really explained a PTP break up. The match starts with an Uso (I still can’t tell them apart) beating up Miz and dancing and “Dabbing” in the process, because you gotta stay relevant with what’s hip! Love Xavier Woods shouting “DON’T CHEER FOR THAT GARBAGE”. I agree, Xavier. Match ends with Miz getting super kicked and Titus hitting Clash of he Titus for the win. These types of matches are always fun no matter who’s a part of it. Cool moment at the end when Titus is in the crowd celebrating with kids he visited at a local Florida school.

Neville vs Kalisto For the United States Championship

This match reminded me of an old school Cruiserweight match from WCW. No doubt these two are exciting to watch and it’s awesome they’re being featured on Smackdown especially in a title match. I did not enjoy the “subtle” racism Jerry Lawler showed. “I don’t know. It doesn’t sit well with me that a Luchador is a Untied States Champion” Whoa, King. I know he’s a heel now but chill out with that.

This was a great match even though it was fast. Kalisto hit an amazing Frankensteiner off the top rope and a modified Salida del Sol for the win to retain the title. I hope Neville and Kalisto meet again soon because this is what the US Tilte needs to keep it fresh and relevant every week.

Chris Jericho’s Highlight Reel Ft. Dean Ambrose and Roman Reigns

Dean Ambrose comes out with a plant to spice up the Highlight Reel set because he’s such a lunatic! As the Dean and Roman banter was getting “heated”, here come The Wyatts to scare us again. Bray talks to the talk but it never ends well. Roman being the voice or reason and saying we don’t know what the hell he’s talking about…he’s right. Roman showing personality is also good. So guess what’s set up? A six man tag match!

The Smackdown debut of The Phenomenal AJ Styles vs Curtis Axel

Curtis Axel calls out AJ Styles for eliminating him at the rumble. Man, I can’t get over how amazing AJ Styles music is. It’s who he is and I’m glad he can be himself in WWE.

I wouldn’t say the match was a squash. Axel got some good offense in. Despite a few distractions from the Social Outcasts, AJ got right back on track. Hit a Pele kick and finally, a Styles Clash for the win.

I loved Mauro Ranallo shouting out NJPW and AJ’s accomplishments. It’s still surreal that he’s in the WWE and I can’t wait for what’s next for AJ Styles.

Charlotte vs Natalya

If you haven’t seen their match in NXT, go watch it. It’s amazing. The early stages of the Diva’s Revolution. I know it won’t happen but I would love to see Natalya in the mix. With Nikki Bella out indefinitely, we need some strong veteran presence in the Diva’s Division, not just the main three of Becky, Charlotte, and Sasha. Charlotte got the victory over Natalya via the Figure 8 and kept it on until Becky came out for the save.

SUPRISE! A Six Man Tag Match Main Event: The Wyatt Family vs Chris Jericho, Dean Ambrose, and Roman Reigns

The match ended in a disqualification after Braun Strowman pulled Roman Reigns before the three count. Hell breaks out until Big Show shows up and decides to be a face this week and makes the save. Smackdown ends with Roman, Y2J, Dean, and Big Show standing tall.

Another Smackdown in the books. Good show, not great. Highlight moments were Neville vs Kalisto and AJ Styles

See you guys next week and thanks for reading!
