Raw Rapid Recap – 7/25/16; A New Era Begins

Tonight marks a new beginning for WWE. We’ve got a new theme, a new set, new member on the commentary team, and a new title?!

Raw Commissioner Stephanie McMahon and GM Mick Foley announce there will be two matches tonight, both Fatal 4 Way bouts, to determine who will face Seth Rollins at SummerSlam….for the WWE Universal Championship! Eh, it’ll grow on me.

Cesaro, Kevin Owens, Rusev, and Finn Balor delivered one hell of a match. Everyone looked like a million bucks with the winner being the main roster newcomer Finn Balor. This was hard hitting, chaotic, flashy, and just a downright beauty. With Balor winning his match it was time to see who he would face later in the show to become the second number on contender.

The second Fatal 4 Way match saw Sheamus, Sami Zayn, Chris Jericho, and Roman Reigns got at it in an equally fun, entertaining match. Much like the opening contest you were on the edge of your seat by the time this match was over. I may not have agreed with the outcome which saw Roman win, but that doesn’t take away from the quality of the match. So it looks like Roman Reigns will take on Finn Balor tonight. The winner of that match will face Seth Rollins at SummerSlam (who received a pass for being Raw’s first pick) to be the first ever Universal Champion.

The New Day had a celebration to mark becoming the longest reigning WWE Tag Team Champions. They brought in a member of the crowd named Sonny Boy. No really, his name was Sonny Boy. The fun was cut short on account of an absolute beatdown from Gallows and Anderson. Is it time to #BeatUpNewDay?

Sasha Banks had a Women’s Championship match. But it wasn’t just any match, it was art. It was the definition of what professional wrestling should be. Bravo to both Charlotte and Sasha who put their bodies on the line to give us arguably the greatest women’s professional wrestling match the main roster has EVER had. In the end we saw Sasha Banks finally realize the dream she’s had since she was ten years old. Congratulations Boss. You deserve it.

Braun Strowman killed some jamoke with a bad Offspring tattoo.

Roman Reigns had a damn fine match for the right to face Rollins. What a night for Balor as he not only becomes the #1 contender for the Universal Championship but it also happens to be his birthday. What a birthday, debut on the main roster, has two superb matches, and becomes #1 contender for a never before held championship in the WWE.

I kind of feel bad for Roman. This guy has been having great matches for quite a while despite never really getting the crowd on his side. Just when it looks like things are looking up, BOOM. He gets suspended and gives his haters another reason to hate. In the long run this can all turn out to be a great story but only time will tell.

Overall this was a fantastic edition of Raw, easily my top Raw of 2016. This was a very entertaining WRESTLING show. Also Graves with Cole and Saxton? Damn fine commentary team. Will things stay the same? We shall see.
