Due to the Presidential Election taking place this recap was delayed. No fear! Firing up the DVR to see what went down with Blue Brand while they are in Glasgow, Scotland!
AJ Styles starts the show off by accusing Dean Ambrose of cheating to gain an opportunity at the WWE Championship. He is also not expecting James Ellsworth to be in the arena for SmackDown or he’d beat the ugly off him and Dean Ambrose. However AJ has bigger things on his plate, that be beating Raw at Survivor Series. Time for the Captain to rally the troops!
Looks like Baron Corbin is staying true to his name and would rather be the Lone Wolf than be on Team Blue. Shane McMahon comes out before things get crazy with a motivational speech for his team. To boost morale Shane announces James Ellsworth will be the official mascot for Team Blue! To get out all the aggression on the team we will see The Wyatt Family vs. Dean Ambrose, James Ellsworth, and Baron Corbin….should he show up.
Yup. Corbin is not in the six man match tonight but he is going to take on the returning Kalisto.
The Vaudevillains vs. Breezango
The winners of this match will qualify to represent Team SD on the Survivor Series Tag Match. This was a quick bout with Vaudevillains controlling 90% of the offense. The referee was distracted with a member of the Vaudevillains which allowed Breeze to hit a Superkick and Fandango to get the win with a Falcon Arrow. I didn’t think Breezango was going to be an option but good to see them get a chance to shine on PPV.
Edge and The Undertaker will be appearing next week for the 900th episode of SmackDown.
Natalya vs. Naomi
During the match Carmella came down to the ring to confront Nikki Bella who was working commentary for the match. Natalya tried breaking up the bickering but got shoved out of the way while Nikki smashed Carmella’s face with a forearm. Natalya almost got counted out by the referee and when she got in by the count of nine, Naomi rolled her up for the win.
It looks like Kane will be taking the place of Baron Corbin in tonight’s six man. His strategy? Don’t tag in.
Baron Corbin vs. Kalisto
This was…something else. Corbin attacks Kalisto before the bell even rings. He sends Kalisto flying out of the ring and while make his way to where Kalisto was, Corbin slips off the apron crashing knee first to the floor. Corbin screams in agony while explaining to the referee his knee popped. Kalisto gets some payback for Corbin putting him on the shelf, he dropkicks Corbin’s knee into the steel steps. While referees are working on Corbin Kalisto dives off the top right into the injured knee with a Frog Splash. Good stuff.
Cool vignette hyping up tonight’s main event.
Looks like Baron Corbin is out of Survivor Series due to injury.
Becky Lynch (c) vs. Alexa Bliss for the SmackDown Women’s Championship
Really really good match. I loved the back and forth to start the early stages of the match giving it a big fight feel. Bliss does a phenomenal job going in with a game plan by attacking Lynch’s arm and sticking to it. Lynch does a great job playing the role of the underdog champion. Going from expert limb targeting to straight up stand and fight. Both women found themselves reversing pinfalls before Becky is able to trap Alexa with the Disarmer submission. Bliss has the ropes within grabbing distance before Becky repositions the hold in the ring. The referee was out of position and does not see the foot of Alexa hang over the top rope. What he does see is Alexa tapping to Becky Lynch who retains the SD Women’s Championship in controversial fashion. Again great match full of counters and good limb work. What a story.
Backstage in the main office The Miz (who is now a mute) and Maryse barge in angry at Daniel Bryan for allowing Dolph Ziggler to defend the Intercontinental Championship at Survivor Series. He gives Miz a take it or leave it rematch versus Dolph for the IC Title next week. Maryse accepts. Highly looking forward to this one.
Another neat announcement from the SD brass, The Brian Kendrick will defend the Cruiserweight Championship against SmackDown’s Kalisto. If Kalisto wins then the Cruiserweight Championship and the entire Division becomes property of SmackDown.
Curt Hawkins vs. Apollo Crews
Nothing noteworthy with this one. Crews goes for a crossbody off the top rope but Hawkins ducks and rolls Apollo up for the win.
The Wyatt Family (Bray Wyatt, Luke Harper, and Randy Orton) vs. Dean Ambrose, James Ellsworth, and Kane
The crowd wants Ellsworth! Kane gave that idea the cut throat. Interesting bit of storytelling with the Wyatt Family. If and when we see some descension in the faction it’ll be be between Luke Harper and new member Randy Orton. I don’t think Harper is completely convinced that Orton is down for whatever the Wyatt Family’s cause is. Not answering calls for tags, quickly tagging Harper out, long stare downs…all not good. Ambrose comes in like he is on fire and cleans house. Kane and Luke Harper battle all the way backstage. Ambrose reenters the ring and collides with Bray Wyatt. The only man left standing is James Ellsworth on the apron. That nut job Ellsworth tags himself in! He starts tuning up the band for No Chin Music. He goes to land it on Bray but Bray turns it into a Sister Abigail and gets the win. Dammit Ellsworth.
Before the entire SD Survivor Series team implodes Shane McMahon sprints down to the ring to try and separate the men. Out comes Daniel Bryan with a major announcement. After going up and down the roster looking for a suitable fifth member for the SD Team Daniel finally came to a decision. The new fifth member of the SD Survivor Series Team is….Shane McMahon! Wow. That’s how SmackDown closes.
Overall SmackDown delivers another solid show and thankfully more than three minute matches. I am really looking forward to next week’s 900th episode.
