WWE Tables, Ladders, and Chairs 2016 Recap and Review

Tonight from Dallas, TX we will see Ziggler and The Miz for the final time in a Ladder Match, Dean Ambrose challenges AJ Styles for the WWE Championship in a TLC Match and more!

Heath Slater and Rhyno (c) vs. Bray Wyatt and Randy Orton for the Tag Team Championships

The one thing there was to focus on was whether Orton and Wyatt can continue to work together this time to capture tag team gold. They executed a ground and pound offense and kept Slater away from Rhyno for the majority of the match. Rhyno got the hot tag and went for Wyatt in the corner but Bray was pushed out of the way by Orton, once again showing Orton and Wyatt are on the same page. On the outside Rhyno aimed to Gore Orton. Before the impact Luke Harper stepped in and took the Gore! Looks like Harper has finally come around to accept Orton in the group. Rhyno goes to attack Wyatt who was doing his creepy crab walk went Orton slid in and caught Rhyno with a huge RKO. 1…2…3! Bray Wyatt and Randy Orton are the new SmackDown Tag Team Champions. Bray and Randy present the belts to Luke in what I assume is a show of unity then pose.

Nikki Bella vs. Carmella in a No DQ Match

This match wasn’t bad just not anything to tell your friends about. Both women played to the No DQ vibe by using a kendo stick. The end came with Nikki Bella completely depleting a fire extinguisher on Carmella then hitting her with the Rack Attack 2.0 for the win.

The Miz (c) w/ Maryse vs. Dolph Ziggler in a Ladder Match for the Intercontinental Championship

Fantastic Ladder Match centered around both men attacking the legs of the other. If you can’t stand, you can’t climb. At first Miz was the guy attacking the leg of Ziggler going as far as to use a Figure Four with Ziggler’s leg wrapped on the inside of a ladder. Dolph’s chance to take control came when Miz had his hands on the title and almost won. Dolph takes the ladder out from under Miz leaving him dangling in the air. Dolph smashes a ladder into Miz’s stomach and he goes crashing down to the mat. I was certain Miz shattered his kneecap on the fall. Dolph almost had the match won but Miz would just not quit. He sets up two ladders for leverage to get to the top. Dolph meets him on the other side and both men battle to grab the title when Dolph hits Miz with three vicious headbutts. Miz is temporarily down but makes it back up the ladder and when he does he kicks Dolph below the belt not once but twice! Dolph goes crashing to the mat while Miz grabs the title to win the match and retain the Intercontinental Championship. Again this was a great match with great storytelling.

Kalisto vs. Baron Corbin in a Chairs Match

I sure did not expect this match to be as good as it was. They stuck with the Big Man vs. Little Man formula but everything they did just worked so well. Kalisto used his speed to combat the power of Corbin. The strategy worked for a while until Corbin caught Kalisto coming off the top by mashing a chair into Kalisto’s face. To add insult to injury Corbin hits Kalisto with his End of Days on a pile of chairs. Again a great match following a simple formula.

Becky Lynch (c) vs. Alexa Bliss in a Tables Match for the Women’s Championship

Pretty good Tables Match between these two. It was scrappy and hard hitting. Much like the Ladder Match earlier this evening a lot of the match was based around strategically setting the table. Highlight for me was Bliss hitting a wicked DDT on a flipped over table. Great visual. The closing came during a battle on the outside apron. Bliss trips the leg of Lynch, goes underneath, and drives her into a table with a Powerbomb. Alexa Bliss is your new SmackDown Women’s Champion!

AJ Styles (c) vs. Dean Ambrose in a TLC Match for the WWE Championship

Raucous crowd split down the middle. Match starts off hot with Ambrose on offense. The match heads up the rampway to the bottom of the stage area. They go throughout the arena brawling. Ambrose has things well in hand. Maybe I spoke too soon because Ambrose comes flying off the barricade and Styles hits a perfectly timed dropkick. At one point Ambrose chucks a ladder right into AJ Styles. The Phenomenal One sets up a section of chairs but Ambrose is the one to take advantage by hitting Styles with a release suplex. Styles now has a giant gaping hole in the butt cheek area of his gear. Both men battle on the outside. Ambrose has Styles on one announce table and he sets up a giant ladder on the table next it. Ambrose ascends the ladder then leaps, driving an elbow right into Styles while the table explodes. Ambrose goes up the ladder in the ring but somehow AJ is able to stop him with a Phenomenal Forearm. From there it’s just a back an forth brawl. Styles hits Ambrose with a Springboard 450 to the outside through a table! The crowd chants “Holy [bleep]”! Styles reenters the ring and is about to climb the when down the ring comes none other than James Ellsworth. Styles is beside himself and goes right for Ellsworth. Styles looks to hit Ellsworth with another Styles Clash on steel steps. This time Ambrose saves Ellsworth from suffering the same fate then hits Styles with Dirty Deeds on the steps! Now would be a perfect time to climb the ladder! The title is just within arms reach when out of nowhere the ladder begins to tilt…James Ellsworth is tipping ladder! Ambrose falls and goes crashing onto tables on the outside! What has James Ellsworth done?! Styles finally gets in the ring thanks to a cheering James Ellsworth, climbs the ladder, and regains his WWE Championship. What an absolute car crash of a TLC Match.

Overall I thought this was a really good special where every match was decent enough to hold your attention. Definitely looking forward to Tuesday to hear why Ellsworth turned on Ambrose. SmackDown creatively is really on a roll. What did you think of tonight’s TLC PPV?:
