RAW Recap – 12/12/16

Tonight could be the night The New Day become the longest reigning WWE Tag Team Champions in company history. Did they get the job done?

The New Day kick off the show tonight in Philly. In under four hours they can tie Demolition as the longest reigning Tag Team Champions in WWE history! They’ll just have to get through the teams of Gallows, Anderson, Sheamus, and Cesaro.

The New Day (c) vs. Gallows and Anderson vs. Sheamus and Cesaro

I was surprised this one didn’t go a bit longer but this was a pretty entertaining match. Gallows and Anderson had a couple spots of really good offense. Cesaro went off like a mad man and destroyed everyone. He and Sheamus have no issues so I hope they continue as a team. The end came when Sheamus and Cesaro had Anderson pinned after a Brogue Kick then Kofi comes out of nowhere with a Trouble in Paradise knocking Sheamus out of the ring. Kofi covers Anderson while Big E holds down Cesaro. 1…2…3! New Day wins! Looks like they will go on to break Demolition’s record. Backstage New Day has a celebration complete with Booty O’s and champagne. New Day gets a little overzealous with the celebration and douse Stephanie McMahon with champagne. Let’s just say Stephanie was not happy.

Braun Strowman vs. Curtis Axel

How do you think this one went?

Ariya Daivari vs. Lince Dorado

This one barely got out of the gate before the “Extraordinary Gentleman” Jack Gallagher came out. Gallagher actually announces he will interfere in the match. Why announce it? Because he’s a gentleman that’s why! The two brawl with Gallagher getting the better of the exchange with a dropkick.

We had a special Rollins Report with Seth Rollins and his guest WWE Universal Champion Kevin Owens. Rollins wants to know the status of the friendship between Owens and Chris Jericho. Owens said there’s nothing to worry about as both men have each other’s back. Owens says after talking to Stephanie McMahon backstage she has made a match tonight. Owens and Jericho will be taking on the New Day tonight for their WWE Tag Team Titles! Jericho comes out and he’s not happy to be in this match teaming with Owens. The Champ informs Jericho that the match will happen whether he wants to or not. Rollins tries to antagonize Jericho by telling him it sounds like Owens is just telling him what to do. Jericho almost puts Rollins on the list but chooses to beat Rollins down instead. Owens looks to help which a hesitant Jericho looks to go along with. The two beat Rollins down till Roman Reigns comes to make the save. Rollins and Reigns send Jericho and Owens retreating.

Looks like at Roadblock Rich Swann will defend the Cruiserweight Championship against TJ Perkins and The Brian Kendrick. We get a small taste tonight.

TJ Perkins vs. The Brian Kendrick

Nothing crazy of note with this except for Kendrick getting a clean pin with Slice Bread #2.

Backstage GM Mick Foley has a chat with Seth Rollins and Roman Reigns. Since Stephanie gave Owens and Jericho an opportunity tonight against The New Day for the Tag Team Titles, Foley is giving that same opportunity to Reigns and Rollins. Tonight’s main event just got a hell of a lot better.

Bayley vs. Alicia Fox

Nothing spectacular but not bad either. Bayley wins another one with a Bayley to Belly out of nowhere. Right now Bayley is up 2-0 in this little feud due to Alicia Fox’s jealousy. It’s kind of making want Bayley to stop talking to Cedric Alexander just so we don’t have to see these matches.

Lana and Rusev were apparently going to give us a glimpse of their life behind close doors but that ended up just being a replay of Rusev’s beat down of Enzo Amore. Big Cass comes down and both men get into a brawl that ends with Rusev retreating.

Sami Zayn vs. Jinder Mahal

Pretty basic stuff. Sami wins with the Helluva Kick. The story with this one is Sami wants to fight Braun Strowman but Foley won’t make the match happen because A) He doesn’t think Sami can win and B) Strowman could injure him. Severely. Mick comes down to the ring with a trade contract in hand. Zayn asks Foley for Strowman one last time which Foley declines once again. He sort of prods at Sami asking if he would like to know who the talent of equal value is that he is getting traded for. Turns out that talent is Eva Marie. Ouch. Sami flips. Seems like the dig at Sami awakened something dark inside Sami as his rage was able to convince Foley to give Sami the match. It will happen this Sunday at Roadblock. Foley reveals that the trade contract he was carrying was actually just a blank piece of paper. Foley wanted to see if he could tap into the dark side of Sami Zayn. This was easily the best segment of the night. It was tense and sometimes uncomfortable. Great stuff. I’m actually now looking forward to Roadblock.

The New Day (c) vs. JeriKO vs. Roman Reigns and Seth Rollins for the RAW Tag Team Championships

This match was absolutely bonkers. MVP of the match had to be Xavier Woods. Once Big E was taken out for a bit it was all Xavier holding his own against practically everyone. If you read any of my recaps you know I am a sucker for near fall spots and this match had plenty. It’s the easiest way to keep the attention of the audience if done right. There was a great spot where JeriKO pretty much had the match won with a Popup Codebreaker. Owens blocks Rollins from breaking up the pin so Rollins uses Owens and pushes him into the pin thus breaking up the pin. Jericho thinks Owens bumped him on purpose and the two begin to fight. The lost of focus leads to Rollins hitting the Pedigree on Jericho. Before Rollins could go for the pin he is dragged out of the ring by Big E. A barely coherent Xavier Woods drapes his arms over Jericho and the referee counts to three. This time The New Day will definitely break the all time record!

As New Day celebrates on the top of the stage Jericho and Owens argue in the ring. Jericho finally gives in but only because Owens has bigger issues to worry about. He turns around right into a vicious spear from Reigns. The show closes with Reigns holding the US Title and Universal Title high in the air.

Overall this was a Raw that was sort of in the middle. Safe segments highlighted by the Foley/Zayn confrontation and the main event. Congrats New Day!
