NXT Recap – 12/14/16

Tonight on NXT we will see Shinsuke Nakamura defend the NXT Championship against Samoa Joe in a Steel Cage. Plus four qualifying matches to determine the participants in next week’s #1 Contender Fatal 4 Way Elimination Match.

Shinsuke Nakamura (c) vs. Samoa Joe in a Steel Cage Match for the NXT Championship

Surprisingly for a cage match this one was pretty safe and basic. The only thing that was sort of different from what you’d expect was a neat Kinsasha from Nakamura from the middle of the top rope. Shinsuke thought about escaping the cage for the win but decided to hit another Kinsasha for good measure. Shinsuke covers Joe for the three count and retains the NXT Championship. Like I said very basic. Also keep in mind that this match has been billed as the final time these two men will face each other. Could a Main Roster call up be in the cards for Samoa Joe?

Tye Dillinger vs. Eric Young – #1 Contender Fatal 4 Way Qualifying Match

Nikki Cross interfered in the match fairly early which means Dillinger wins via DQ and will be one of the competitors in the Fatal 4 Way next week to determine the #1 contender for the NXT Championship. After the match Sanity attacked Dillinger however he’s able to outsmart them. Suddenly out of nowhere Damo attacks Tye. He exits the ring and heads to the back leaving Sanity sort of in shock.

No Way Jose vs. Andrade “Cien” Almas – #1 Contender Fatal 4 Way Qualifying Match

I really enjoyed this match. It seems now that Almas doesn’t have to worry about the crowd liking him, he is more at ease in the ring. Almas was able to show off the expert luchador style that got him signed in the first place. No Way Jose was a perfect opponent for Almas as the pace was quick with no missteps. Andrade picks up the win with a really cool arm capture DDT. Here’s hoping we see these two lock up again the future.

Elias Sampson vs. Roderick Strong – #1 Contender Fatal 4 Way Qualifying Match

Want to get the crowd to really hate a guy? Stick him out there with a guitar he doesn’t know how to play and make him sing even though he is basically tone deaf. I’m so happy to see Roderick Strong in NXT. Strong brings veteran experience with a quick hard hitting offensive arsenal. Sampson came out with a lot of aggression and controlled most of the match but the thing about Strong is if you give him a window he is going to hit you hard and fast. Strong pulls off a gut buster then a Sick Kick for the win.

Bobby Roode vs. Oney Lorcan – #1 Contender Fatal 4 Way Qualifying Match

Bobby Roode controlled much of the match being very slow paced and methodical. Lorcan had two great comebacks but it still wasn’t enough to defeat the Glorious One. Bobby Roode picks up the win with an Impaler DDT.

So there you have it, a Championship Steel Cage Match and four singles matches. Not a bad showing of NXT. What did you think?
