DIY and The Revival go at it one more time for the NXT Tag Team Championships. Grab the popcorn.
Before the show went on the air NXT Women’s Champion Asuka is jumped by Billie Kay and Peyton Royce outside of the arena. Asuka doesn’t seem like the type of person you would want to attack and try to embarrass. Tread lightly ladies.
Billie Kay and Peyton Royce vs. Macy Evans and Sarah Bridges
I figured this would be a one sided match and for the most part it was but when Bridges had a pretty nice hot tag coming in. Regardless Evans and Bridges fall to the Australian Duo who won the match using a running facebuster into Kay’s knee.
After the match Kay and Royce get on the mic and antagonize Asuka, asking if they are competition for her now. Asuka comes limping down to the ring with referees around her trying to talk her out of getting in the ring. She doesn’t listen and begins getting beat down by Kay and Royce. Suddenly Nikki Cross of SANITY comes down and makes the save for Asuka! She literally scares the ladies out of the ring. Asuka comes to then gets hit with a missile dropkick from Cross! To quote Corey Graves on commentary, “What the hell is going on?”
We get a word from SANITY who say they plan to take everything in NXT. Damo, or the recently renamed Killian Dain, looks on from a distance.
Elias Samson vs. Jonathan Cruz
I loved this match. It was a borderline squash and it was awesome. The difference it terms of size and power is in Samson’s favor and it’s not even close. He just manhandles Cruz. Multiple times I let out an “OOOOH” wincing while I watch. Samson beat this dude and I thought he damn near killed him. Like I said I loved this match. I should hate it based on the fact that Samson completely ignores the fact that he is tone deaf in every way. But I love a good beatdown.
Andrade “Cien” Almas vs. Oney Lorcan
You know what I love just as much as a good beatdown? Two guys just beating the hell out of each other! Oney is all business tonight while Almas is usual cocky self. The cockiness might be double tonight. Graves described Lorcan as a guy who uses his whole body as a weapon and I couldn’t agree more. He’s a throwback brawler who just wants to hurt people. Almas for all the flash and swagger really kept up with Lorcan in the striking department, Utilizing strikes with lucha offense. It was actual the brain of Almas that brought him the win as he baited the referee into thinking he needed a break due to injury. The referee is trying to get distance from Lorcan when Almas kicks Lorcan right in the knee. Almas hits the Hammerlock DDT and gets the win.
Tom Phillips sat down with NXT Champion Shinsuke Nakamura to discuss his next opponent at TakeOver: San Antonio, Bobby Roode. Tom said earlier he tried to get a word from Roode regarding this match but Roode refused to comment on camera. Roode however did give something to Tom to give to Nakamura. Roode’s ticket from NXT TakeOver: Dallas, the night Nakamura made his debut. What is the symbolism behind this?
#DIY (c) vs. The Revival for the NXT Tag Team Championships
This match was Tag Team wrestling. You couldn’t write up a better “How To..” manual on constructing a Tag match. Revival as always showed their chemistry as a team is second to none. DIY did a great job of fighting from underneath and really getting the crowd to go crazy on a hot tag to Ciampa. Toward the end of the match Ciampa catches Wilder in his armbar submission and just before Wilder taps Dawson shoves Gargano into the pile breaking the hold. Dash and Dawson try and regroup but end up getting hit with the superkick/knee strike finisher from DIY. 1..2..3! DIY retain the NXT Tag Team Championship.
Before DIY can even celebrate their victory they are interrupted by the music of the Authors of Pain. Paul Ellering comes out and from behind AoP attack DIY. They completely destroy DIY before holding up the Tag Team Titles.
NXT GM William Regal is in his office and he makes the announcement that DIY will defend the tag Team Championships against the Authors of Pain at NXT TakeOver: San Antonio. Also next week will be the contract signing between Bobby Roode and Shinsuke Nakamura. Asuka suddenly comes barging into the office demanding Regal make a match at NXT TakeOver. He asks against who and Asuka replies, “ALL OF THEM.” Oh boy.
That’s it for this episode of NXT. I know there have been some rumblings that NXT in a cold spell in terms of their product and while it may be a notch down from the days of Neville and Sami Zayn, the quality storytelling is still there not to mention the in ring work is still pretty stellar. I enjoy it.
