SmackDown Live Recap – 9/4/18; A Night of Surprises

Tonight The Usos, Rusev Day, and Sanity square off in a Tornado Tag Match and someone will be in a singles Main Event match on SmackDown Live for the first time ever in their career!

Tonight’s SmackDown kicks off with Renee Young doing an in-ring interview with Daniel Bryan and Brie Bella. They call out Miz and Maryse but get a video message instead:

Daniel Bryan def. Andrade “Cien” Almas: I’m so happy Almas has been featured heavily on every week in high profile matches with the likes of Bryan and AJ Styles. This match was just as good as the one last week with Bryan getting the win for a second week in a row. After the match, Miz and Maryse appear on the big screen from Detroit’s finest Italian restaurant. Looks like Miz and Maryse are dodging another beat down.

Charlotte Flair and Becky Lynch answered some questions from Tom Phillips from separate locations:

Naomi def. Peyton Royce: Quick match. Naomi picks up the win with a slingshot sunset flip. As soon as the bell rang Billie Kay ran in to help Peyton attack Naomi. Asuka comes down to the ring to clean house and make the save for Naomi.

We get a great video package recapping the feud between Jeff Hardy and Randy Orton which will all lead to both men meeting inside a Hell in a Cell.

Miz and Maryse cut their date short to confront Daniel and Brie who left looking for the Miz and Maryse. Does anyone call before showing up at these places?

Last week Samoa Joe promised to be at the home of AJ Styles in Gainesville, GA but instead, he’s here in Detroit. Joe wants Wendy Styles to know that he is not a bad man, he’s simply delivering his promise of bringing her husband back to his family and off the road. Joe says the Styles family should get used to having AJ home because after Sunday AJ is going night night permanently.

After confusing Maryse with Carmella, R-Truth finds the real Carmella to ask if she would be in his corner for his match tonight against The Miz. R-Truth convinces Carmella by snitching on Maryse and telling Carmella Maryse called her Staten Island trash. A confused Tye Dillinger asks Truth why he would do that to which Truth says Dillinger still has a lot to learn from him. Today’s lesson is how to get yourself in the SmackDown main event.

We get a second video package for the coming Orton/Hardy Hell in a Cell match this time from the perspective of Randy Orton.

Rusev Day def. Sanity and The Usos in a Tornado Tag Match: Another stellar multi-team match. I’m really enjoying the tornado caveat to these matches as it makes things unpredictable and keeps the action at a fast pace. Another thing I am enjoying, as I’m sure I’ve mentioned in before, is the teams having to win matches and really earn a spot to take on the Champions, in this case, The New Day. This is how you make Titles and their holders important. Rusev Day surprisingly pick up the win here so next week they will take on The Bar to determine the #1 contenders for New Day’s Tag Team Championships.

R-Truth def. The Miz: Yes, you read that right. R-Truth, in his first career main event SmackDown match, beat The Miz, clean. Okay sure The Miz was distracted by the playing of Bryan’s music along with Bryan and Brie’s return to the arena, but R-Truth won a freakin’ main event on SmackDown in 2018. The match itself was pretty entertaining as well with Truth really working to keep pace with Miz. The Miz is a perfect bad guy in this day and age, still getting the crowd to hate everything he does. Once Truth picked up the win Bryan ran to the ring and attacked The Miz. Brie Bella worked over Maryse but was stopped by a surprising Zelina Vega. Andrade Cien Almas jumped Bryan from behind. The action reenters the ring where things get reversed. Daniel and Brie put Zelina and Andrade in the Yes Lock respectively while Miz and Maryse look on in horror. What a way to end the show.

The past few weeks of WWE TV from both brands have been really good stuff. They’re telling stories that are keeping me wanting to watch what happens the next week. How will Almas and Vega fit in the beef with Bryan, The Miz, Maryse, and Brie Bella? Could we be getting a three-way match? R-Truth got the main event win on SmackDown, holy crap.
