SmackDown Live Recap – 12/4/18

SmackDown Live comes to us from the Frank Erwin Center in Austin, TX. Tonight we will have a contract signing for the TLC Women’s Championship Match at the TLC PPV. Also, Daniel Bryan will be a guest on MizTV.

SmackDown Live kicks off with a contract signing for the Women’s TLC Match. Champion Becky Lynch doesn’t think Asuka or Charlotte Flair are willing to do whatever it takes to win while Charlotte says Becky dropped the ball when she got her face broken by Nia. Asuka makes sure to point out that Becky already beat Charlotte, she’s beaten Becky, and she knows she can beat Charlotte. Becky senses the hostility between the other women so she signs the contract and gets out of there. Charlotte and Asuka trash talk back and forth when they are interrupted by Mandy Rose and Sonya Deville. Mandy says both Asuka and Charlotte are undeserving while Sonya says Asuka’s Battle Royale win was a fluke. Mandy threatens Asuka and Charlotte so SmackDown GM makes a match, Sonya and Mandy vs. Charlotte and Asuka.

Asuka and Charlotte Flair vs. Mandy Rose and Sonya Deville: Obviously there is some tension between Asuka and Charlotte which is evident during the match. Charlotte dominated her portion of the offense while Asuka held her but had more of the difficult time holding her own. Women’s Champion makes her way to ringside to watch the match. Asuka finally gets the tag who comes in on fire. On the outside Mandy yanks Asuka off the apron then hits Charlotte with a forearm. Asuka retaliates by yanking Mandy off the apron. When Asuka gets back on the apron Charlotte hits her with a boot thinking she was Mandy. There’s a reversal of O’Connor rolls but when Charlotte has the pin Asuka deliberately kicks her lights out. Sonya stacks Charlotte up for the win. Good thing the Triple Threat TLC Match is every woman for herself.

Cesaro vs. Xavier Woods vs. Jey Uso: The beginning saw Jey and Xavier have this great back and forth sequence. It really rings true that the New Day and Uso could have matches till the end of time and they will always be fantastic. Cesaro looks for the opening before we head to break. Cesaro is really at a disadvantage because Jey and Xavier know each other so well. Despite this disadvantage, Cesaro shows off his incredible power by swinging Jey Uso…with Xavier Woods on his shoulders. Quick back and forth offense from all three men ends with Cesaro eating a Superkick from Jey for the win. Such a fun match.

MizTV with Daniel Bryan

Jeff Hardy vs. Randy Orton: The action begins quickly and both men battle on the outside. Jeff takes a page out of Randy’s playbook and hits him with a release back suplex onto the commentary table. We come back from commercial break with Orton keeping Hardy grounded. Hardy connects with a kick to the gut for an opening but Hardy’s comeback is shortlived. Orton drops Hardy with his draping DDT. We have a counter for a counter of finishing maneuvers. Hardy looks like he’s going to hit the Swanton but Orton rolls out of the ring. Hardy once again drops Orton back first onto the commentary. Hardy looks like he is going to dive from the top rope to the table when he is stopped by Samoa Joe who is on the big screen. It looks like Joe is hanging out at a local bar in Austin. Hardy took his eye off the ball which allows Randy to hit Jeff with the RKO for the win.

After the match, Joe gives a PSA on the dangers of drinking alcohol to excess.

AJ Styles vs. The Miz: Daniel Bryan is on commentary for this one. It’s kind of hard to focus on the match with Corey Graves hilariously getting Daniel Bryan riled up over GMOs and plastic bottles. This match is evenly matched with neither man really getting the upper hand. The action heads to the outside where Bryan taunts AJ with a handshake gesture. Miz comes from behind and launches AJ into the steel steps. Miz rolls AJ back in the ring and hits him with the Skull Crushing Finale. AJ kicks out at two. Daniel once again gets involved when the referee isn’t looking. The distraction doesn’t help The Miz as seconds later he gets caught in the Calf Crusher and he taps.

AJ doesn’t get time to celebrate as Daniel Bryan hits him from behind with a chop block to the knee. Daniel absolutely destroys AJ from wrapping his knee around the ring post, trapping his arms and stomping his face, to locking in a vicious heel hook. This “new” Daniel Bryan is manic, angry about the environment, and brutal. I kind of dig it.

I wonder if there will be an alliance down the road between The Miz and Daniel Bryan. It would add another layer to this already complex rivalry but if given creative focus it could be great.
